I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: Nov. 7-8

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. The temperatures will be brisk, but nothing a scarf and sweater can’t help guard against. The real cold shows up late Sunday and brings with it a good chance for snow. Mary Poppins would advise we bear it with a spoon full of sugar. Our beloved Western Nevada Musical Theater Company has brought the Broadway Musical version to town, and it is guaranteed to be a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious performance. Don’t miss the annual Day of the Dead event at the Nevada State Museum. Crafts, performances, and more await the whole family.

  • Carson Valley Art Association Annual Scholarship Benefit Art Show at the CVIC Hall, Minden (9am-6pm)
  • Annual Craftique Open House at 1201 N. Saliman Road (9am-4pm; handcrafted items by local artisans)

It’s that time of year again. Let craft fair season begin! Get a jump on your holiday shopping with locally handcrafted, one of a kind gifts. The First Methodist Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Family, the Calvary Chapel in Dayton, and Carson Valley’s Methodist Church are all hosting a fair today. Classy Seconds Thrift Shop is where you’ll find Christmas Unwrapped for all your decorating needs.

Nevada Humane Society is hosting its first volunteer orientation today at the Community Center. Learn what it takes to share some love with homeless pets, and sign-up to help. In the future, you’ll need to sign-up for the orientation in advance, but this month is open to all comers. Kids that love dogs will enjoy Love on a Leash at the Carson City Library: read to a therapy dog and get a book to take home for free!

  • First Monthly Volunteer Orientation for the Nevada Humane Society in the Community Center Gym (10am; Volunteers must be at least 10 years old and must offer a minimum time commitment to the program; anyone interested is welcome to attend and volunteer applications will be taken at the orientation. For future orientations, those interested must apply in advance)
  • Nevada Day Art Show at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in the Brewery Arts Center (10am-4pm)

Rain, snow, or shine (although we all hope for shine) the Downtown Business Association’s wine walk is a Carson City favorite. A great time to check out the shops, visit with friends, and stroll about downtown. You’ll find live music along the way at Touched by Angels and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Bibliophiles can meet local authors at Comma Coffee and Morley’s Books.

Bliss Mansion is a beautiful home, and tonight it will be filled with beautiful music. The Carson City Symphony is hosting an Evening of Music and Dessert with classical harpist, Marina Roznitovsky Oster.

Art is alive in Carson City. Head to the Brewery Arts Center for an Artist Reception at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery this evening. Artsy Fartsy is a favorite stop during the downtown wine walk, and Jeffery makes sure to stock the gallery with great gift ideas. The ‘Gem of a Fundraiser’ for the Circles Initiative has teamed up with Capital City Arts Initiative for a High Art, Low Prices auction. Tickets are still available for the event to be held at Thunder Canyon Country Club in Washoe Valley.

Model train lovers are in for a special treat. It’s National Model Train Month and local aficionados are opening their doors and showing off their sets. Grab a tour guide from Hobbytown by the Denny’s Restaurant, and all aboard for a fun day. The Classic Cinema Series returns to Galaxy Theater with a showing of Die Hard. Yippy-ki-yay.
